Hot Rails to Hell: Political Train Wrecks Claim Candidates

by Paul on November 6th, 2006

There’s a certain smell in the air, an amalgam of steaming hot bullshit infused with brimstone, that tells you it’s definitely an election year. When you’re eyes start watering, election day’s gotta be close.

It’s been a particularly depressing and dirty build up this time around, and we offer for your amusement our analysis of some candidates who exploded, imploded, or otherwise burned up and melted down on the launch pad well in advance of the fateful Tuesday. Ranked in proximity to the Bay Area:

  • Jaynry Mak, candidate for S.F. Board of Supes: Mak first got caught funneling campaign funds through dubious sources, then got pegged for forgetting to report $6 million in real estate–just slipped her mind. Advice from StarkedSF: Willie Brown was mayor in this town for eight years, and his predecessors weren’t exactly amateurs either. If you want to play games in San Francisco, you better be a player. Extra credit: it’s always particularly amusing when somebody like this happens to be an attorney.
  • Tan Nguyen, O.C. republican congressional candidate: This guy got smoked for sending threatening letters to potential hispanic voters. Run-of-the-mill Orange County racism, but what’s funny is his timing. After trying the old “you can’t get good help these days” routine, Nguyen turned into lunch for the media and both ravenous parties, as Schwarzy and Angelides battled to see who could eviscerate the defenseless Nguyen quicker. Visual: remember the scene in Jurassic Park where they lower a cow into the velociraptor compound?
  • Rumsfeld: Not actually running for anything this time around. But considering the fragging he got from his own military, the only running he’ll be doing in the future is away–and fast.

    Wow!
Is Tan Nguyen for real? Does he real think hovering over people at a polling booth on November 7, will real help his cause? I think it might have worked in back in elementary school, I guess he does what has worked for him as an adult. He real should have step aside as he was asked by the party (he must think he is bigger than the party), but instead he will continue to disgrace himself, his family, the Vietnamese community, the GOP and Orange County. This guy was always way over his head; a) He never was a serious contender, b) He sent out a letter that he did not comprehend (on letterhead that was not his by a couple who happen to be his friend and staff member), c) He first denies his campaign sent the letter, d) He accuses and fires his staff member for the letter, e) He does an about face and tries to re-hire his staff member, f) He has a tissy fit and blames the whole thing on his opponent, which brings me to his campaign theme which is “I Blame other for my shortcomings, I do not take full responsibility for my mistakes and do not show grace under pressure”. Well, yesterday “Joe Public” “Told Him It Like It Is”. How appropriate!

God knows what this guy was thinking; you have to use some judgment in picking the people who do your campaigning. Not to make light of his immigrant status, there also seems to be a bit of hypocrisy here.
